Description

Most of the territory is covered by coniferous forests on eskers. There are six protected plant species characteristic of such forests – the forest pasqueflower, Hungarian sainfoin, cowslip lungwort, northern dragon-head, dwarf birch, meadow pasqueflower. The Blue Hills are a chain of undulating hills and part of the Lielie Kangari range. In ancient times, there was a refuge castle mound here. It is currently a popular holiday destination for Ogre inhabitants and city guests and occupies an area of 312 ha. In winter, a lighted cross-country ski track on hilly terrain is maintained in the nature park, but, in summer, the trail network is available for Nordic walking, cycling and other holidaymakers’ activities.

 

The viewing tower is erected at the highest point of the Ogre Blue Hills nature park approximately 90 m above sea level. The tower is 30 m high and offers a view of the town of Ogre surrounded by green woodlands. When the weather is clear, it is even possible to see the television tower in Zaķusala, Riga.

The viewing platform The viewing platform on the steep banks by the Dubkalni water reservoir offers a spectacular view of the surroundings. From the platform, a wooden staircase leads down to the waterside through the young pine trees.

 Cross-country ski track

The 12-km-long ski track has been set up and is well maintained for snow and frost conditions and connects the towns of Ikšķile and Ogre. From October until the middle of March, a 10 km section of the track is lit, which ensures its usage even after sunset. The light is turned on at twilight and kept until 10 pm. The relief of the nature park is rich in the slopes of various levels of difficulty and allows the visitors to enjoy beautiful sights. The track often hosts competitions. During the winter season, equipment rentals are available for both children and adults willing to ski.

Adventure park Milžu taka (Giants’ Trail)

The track made of wood and rope structures suspended in the trees includes three levels of complexity. The total length of the track is 600 m, height – up to 11 m, the slopes – 30 m and 70 m. The course features 65 obstacles.


Outdoor fitness equipment and children’s playground

A children's playground with swings, wooden obstacles and interesting wooden statues which can be used for climbing. The area also has wooden parallel bars as well as other fitness equipment for those who wish to exercise outdoors and stay fit and healthy. 

 

Waterside recreational areas

Campfires are forbidden in the park, therefore, there are several designated picnic areas with grilling possibilities.
